The art of weaving is an ancient long tradition in Eritrea and Ethiopia passed down from generation to generation. Shemanes (translated as "Weavers") are artisans that use traditional hand looms to make intricately woven textiles that feature stunning bold colors and patterns.
It all starts with the processing of raw cotton that is separated and spun into thread. The cotton is then strung across the loom (vertical) and cross woven with cotton or silk (horizontal). The process is very labour intensive and can take a few days depending on the complexity of the design to make fabric for one dress.
The beauty of the fabric is undeniable and the art of weaving is truly a gift!
